There's A Limit To The Number of Fish In The Sea

Ocean fish are wildlife - the last such creatures that we hunt on a large scale. And while the sheer size of the oceans is awesome, there are many signs that we have found their limits. The Zoo's goal is to raise awareness about the importance of buying seafood from sustainable sources to ensure a future with abundant ocean wildlife. Nearly 75% of the world's fisheries are either fully fished or over fished. Sustainable sources are those that can exist over the long-term without compromising species survival or the health of the surrounding ecosystem. Seafood Watch (a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium) and Ocean Wise are programs supported by the Toronto Zoo that educate how, through better practices, we can create healthy, abundant oceans for everyone! But there is still much to be done. Click here to download the Seafood Watch sustainable seafood guide outlining 'best, good and avoid' options.

TORONTO ZOO PARTNERS WITH SEAFOOD WATCH
IN SUPPORT OF HEALTHY OCEANS

Seafood Watch, a program initiated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 1997, aims to raise awareness of the importance of the choices consumers make.

Seafood Watch encourages the support of fisheries and fish farms that are better for the environment. By following Seafood Watch's recommendations on which seafood to buy and which to avoid, you can support those seafood producers that are environmentally friendly.

Use the handy pocket guide created by Seafood Watch to choose seafood from sustainable sources. Whether fished or farmed, seafood from sustainable sources are those that can exist over the long-term without compromising species' survival or the health of the surrounding ecosystem.
