THE SURF’S UP AT SPLASH ISLAND
An Exciting, 2-Acre Waterplay Area
It’s no rumour – the surf is really up here at the Toronto Zoo! You may have
already enjoyed our exciting children’s splash play area Splash Island, which
opened on July 31, 2002. If not, here’s a few reasons why you and your family
should check it out.
The coolest spot in town, Splash Island is one of the reasons the Toronto Zoo
was voted Best Family Outing destination by Toronto.com two years in a row. It’s
two solid acres of splash action where kids of all ages can have some hands-on
fun while picking up some fun facts about Canada’s waterways. And it’s all free
with the price of general admission.
This fabulous family area was designed to let kids discover which plants and
animals live in different bodies of water in Canada. All this is accomplished by
a magical menagerie of oversized animals all spouting water, plus waterslides, a
waterfall, and plenty of misters. In the Arctic area, for example, kids will
encounter a king-sized Polar bear along with a walrus and iceberg, while in the
river section, they can play on a Canadian beaver.
Conceived also as a place where families could meet and cool off, Splash
Island is a delight for parents. Changing facilities and washrooms are located
in the immediate area. Parents can monitor kids from perimeter benches – and
just so they won’t feel left out, we’ve fitted these areas with "kool pipes"
which spray a refreshing mist. Access to this rubberized area is controlled,
while raised features such as the Adventure Playship are equipped with safety
rails and animal surfaces have been treated to prevent slipping. Splash Island
staff with immediate access to Zoo Security or medical help, monitor the
area.
Splash Island is Phase 1 of the Zellers Discovery Zone project. A 750-seat
amphitheatre overlooking the Zoo’s waterway, and an intimate Kids Zoo including
an animal contact area, are the second and third phases.
The new water play area has become a hit not only with families (even parents
could be seen suited up), but also with adolescents and young adults – all
enjoying the two acres of hot fun and cool water.
"Splash Island will not only notch up the enjoyment factor of a Zoo visit, it
will provide an educational experience that’s pure fun," comments Zoo General
Manager and C.E.O. Cal White.
Got the bathing suits, sunscreen, towels, - and kids? We’ll see you soon in
the fabulous new Splash Island!
