CONSERVATION at the TORONTO ZOO
Not surprisingly, we are a collection of plant and animal lovers! That is why the Toronto Zoo works hard to conserve and rehabilitate endangered animals, plants, and ecosystems all over the world.
The conservation division at the Toronto Zoo is made up of curators, animal health and nutritional specialists, veterinarians, behavioural researchers, public educators, and curatorial personnel. Working together, the conservation staff is responsible for the tremendous conservation and research initiatives that have made the Toronto Zoo one of the leading zoos in the world for wildlife experience and conservation of Nature.

Highlight of the Season A tale of two fishes

Following the success of The Toronto Zoo "Great Lakes Outreach Program" we are pleased to announce the launch of Aqua-Links an international outreach education program. Aqua-Links promotes clean water practices in the two Great Lakes regions of the world - North America and East Africa. The program provides schools with aquaria containing a locally endangered fish species, and links students in Canada and East Africa together to discuss global aquatic conservation issues.
The recent loss of more than 300 haplochromine cichlid species from Lake Victoria is described as the greatest vertebrate mass extinction in recorded history (IUCN Red Book). The two Great Lake regions are facing many similar problems, and Aqua-Links will educate local communities on what they can do as individuals to save their valuable water resource and local fish species. |
"Funding for this project was provided in part by the Government of Canada's EcoAction Community Funding Program"
